Much of my blog content is about real estate in Emerald Isle, NC where I live and work. I enjoy the surrounding coastal communities, as well, for example, Indian Beach, Salter Path, Pine Knoll Shores and Atlantic Beach here on Bogue Banks. But, there are also some very interesting coastal communities that hug the mainland on what we call the Crystal Coast. Today, I highlight Swansboro, NC.

Once upon the site of a Native American Algonkian village, Swanboro began its life in the mid 1700's when a prominent landowner, Theophilus Weeks, divided a potion of his coastal landholdings. With the creation of 48 lots with 6 streets, the colonial port town was born. n 1783, the town was officially incorporated as Swannsborough, named in honor of the NC house of Commons Speaker, Samuel Swann.

The spelling of the name has changed but the town tucked along the North Carolina coast where the White Oak River meets the Intracoastal Waterway, is steeped in history, charm and southern hospitality. From its quaint historic waterfront district to its pristine undeveloped beaches the Swansboro area offers a relaxing yet exciting destination to explore and call "home."

Strolling through the streets of the historic downtown waterfront, you can imagine life as it once was for the port community. Many historic buildings are well preserved and carry national historic designations. Tall shrimp boats mark the horizon, bringing reminders of the town's early heritage of ship building and commercial fishing.

The pace of life in Swansboro is the epitome of relaxed, coastal living. Outdoor living is a way of live here as it is everywhere on the Crystal Coast. Start by taking a tranquil stroll along one of the area's pristine beaches. Bear Island is great for shell collecting. Then, try a seaside adventure...or two! Take your pick from fishing, boating, paddle boarding, surfing, kayaking, camping, hiking and biking!

Swansboro is a boater's paradise. Because of its convenient location close to water and its intriguing maritime history, Swansboro is a popular destination for transient boaters, especially those who are plying the Great Ditch. The town has three docking facilities including the Moore Street Dock, the Main Street Dock and the Church Street Dock which gives overnight boaters with boast measuring 26 feet or larger easy access to the downtown area. Two local marinas, Casper's and Dudley's are also conveniently located in downtown Swansboro.

Across the Intracoastal Waterway, outdoor enthusiats will love Hammock's Beach State Park, Swansboro's coastal treasure. The park is home to Bear Island, an undeveloped barrier island that can only be reached by ferry or private boat. This largely undisturbed setting is popular with day trippers, boaters, kayakers and campers (bring mosquito repellent. )

Swansboro hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year including the Annual swansboro Mllet Festival. Other popular festivals are the Arts by the Sea, Military Appreciation Day, Fourth of July Fireworks, Swansboro by Candlelight, the Christmas Flotilla, and the Swanboro Rotary Oyster Roast. Swansboro hosts fishing tournaments throughout the year including the Memorial Day Kig Mackeral Blue Water, the Hook and Bone Redfish, and the Speckled Trout.

Homes with stunning views of the White Oak River or the Intracoastal waterway are easy to find in the 1.4 miles that make up the present day town of Swansboro. With a population of just over 3,000, Swansboro has two county elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.
